Vikram Misri, currently Deputy National Security Advisor, will assume the role of Foreign Secretary starting July 15.

The former ambassador to China is anticipated to address the growing tensions between Delhi and Beijing.

On June 28, the Government announced that Deputy National Security Advisor Vikram Misri will assume the role of Foreign Secretary on July 15. Mr. Misri, who previously served as India's ambassador to China, will succeed the current Foreign Secretary, Vinay Mohan Kwatra.

The Personnel Ministry stated, "Vikram Misri, IFS (1989), currently Deputy National Security Advisor in the National Security Council Secretariat, will take over as Foreign Secretary effective July 15, 2024, succeeding Shri Vinay Kwatra." Mr. Misri, renowned for his expertise in India-China relations, is anticipated to emphasize the ongoing tensions between Delhi and Beijing in his new position.

Career and Education

Born in Srinagar in 1964, Misri's early education took place in Gwalior. He pursued his undergraduate studies in history at Hindu College, Delhi University, and later earned an MBA from XLRI.

Misri embarked on his diplomatic journey with the Indian Foreign Service in the 1989 cohort. His initial postings included assignments at Indian missions in Brussels and Tunis.

Throughout his distinguished career, Misri served as India's ambassador to Spain (2014-2016) and Myanmar (2016-2018). He held significant roles in various Indian missions, including those in Pakistan, the United States, Germany, Belgium, and Sri Lanka.

Renowned as a China expert, Misri's final ambassadorial role was in Beijing, where he served from January 2019 to December 2021, a period marked by the Galwan Valley clashes.

Misri took up his current role in the National Security Council Secretariat in January 2022, where he reported to NSA Ajit Doval.

Who will replace Misri as Deputy NSA

India’s ambassador to France, Jawed Ashraf is expected to be appointed the deputy NSA, according to a PTI report. Additionally, the government will also have to appoint India’s envoy to the US and New Delhi’s permanent representative to the United Nations in New York.

The permanent representative of India to the United Nations (UN) position became vacant after Ruchira Kamboj, the first woman to hold the post, retired earlier this month.
